Why “WHEN” is Important
SessionComa Care
DescriptionThe care of the patient in coma technical working group is focused on identifying best care practices for patients with coma and disorders of consciousness. Specifically, what actions should neurocritical care practitioners use today? A vital part of understanding the here-and-now of direct care interventions is to understand that which interventions should be used must be contextualized by temporal variables. There number and range of interventions that have been demonstrated to be helpful in neurocritical care is extensive and growing. Intuitively we all recognize the need to understand optimal timing of interventions. We would not administer tenecteplase 2 days after an ischemic stroke, and we would not perform a hemicraniectomy as prophylaxis before the patient has an intracerebral hemorrhage. But, there is a pressing need to understand the ‘when’ for interventions. When is the exact right moment in time for each intervention and how does the timing of interventions impact the outcome? This session will highlight the need for intervention timing research.
