Status Epilepticus in Latin America: Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Opportunities
DescriptionStatus epilepticus (SE) is a prevalent neurological emergency, accounting for approximately 10% of epilepsy-related deaths, with refractory SE (RSE) and super-refractory SE (SRSE) associated with mortality rates of up to 39.5%. Additionally, Acute symptomatic seizures (ASyS) commonly occur in patients with acute brain injuries, such as traumatic brain injury and stroke. The advent of continuous electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring has led to increased detection of ASyS. ASyS can result in significant structural damage, with about 19 to 25% of patients developing epilepsy. Disparities in SE exist, with non-Hispanic blacks having the highest rates and increased odds of post-SE tracheostomy and gastrostomy. Furthermore, there are disparities in SE management in Latin America due to limited availability of antiseizure medication formulations and rescue medications, as well as inadequate access to continuous EEG monitoring. In this presentation, we will discuss the current state of SE management in Latin America, focusing on the utilization of continuous EEG for diagnosing and managing SE and acute symptomatic seizures.
