Thrombectomy Access and Outcomes: Navigating Challenges in Low and Middle-Income Countries
DescriptionThis talk proposal for the upcoming Neurocritical Care Annual Meeting focuses on the pivotal issue of Thrombectomy access and outcomes in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Thrombectomy, a life-saving procedure for acute ischemic stroke, remains significantly underutilized in LMICs due to a myriad of challenges ranging from limited healthcare infrastructure to socio-economic barriers. The presentation will commence with an overview of the current global landscape of stroke care, emphasizing the stark disparities in thrombectomy access between high-income countries and LMICs. Recent data highlighting the burden of stroke and the underutilization of thrombectomy in these regions will be examined. Subsequently, the talk will delve into specific challenges faced by LMICs, including lack of trained personnel, limited availability of necessary equipment, and financial constraints. Real-world case studies will be presented to illustrate these issues and their impact on patient outcomes, as well as the experiences from the Resilient Trials. The focus will then shift to potential strategies to overcome these barriers. This will include discussing innovative approaches like telemedicine for expert guidance, training programs for local healthcare providers, and collaborations with international organizations to improve infrastructure and funding. The talk aims to not only shed light on the urgent need for improved access to thrombectomy in LMICs but also to foster a dialogue on practical solutions. By addressing these challenges, the neurocritical care community can take significant steps towards reducing the global inequality in stroke care and improving outcomes for patients worldwide.
