Serial Neurologic Assessment in Neurocritical Care: Where have we been? Where are we going?
DescriptionSerial neurologic assessment performed by bedside nurses is seen as foundational in monitoring for patients in neurocritical care, however a significant amount of variation exists in the content and frequency of these assessments. This session will summarize the variety of neurologic assessment tools and scales with psychometric properties such as interrater reliability. Current literature on the impact of serial neurologic assessment on detection of clinical deterioration and on complications such as interrupted sleep and delirium will be reviewed.
Integration of available technology into neurologic assessment will be discussed as well as the application of future technologies such as artificial intelligence derived predictive algorithms for clinical deterioration. A future state of neurologic monitoring in neurocritical care will be suggested using a clinical case format.
