Recognizing the Signs, Symptoms, Impacts, and Resolutions of Incivility Within the Healthcare Organization
DescriptionClinicians enter the healthcare profession with the noble intention to serve others, it is perhaps paradoxical to see that their intention extends primarily to the patients and families. But for some, not to their peers or other healthcare professionals.
Incivility in the workplace is not always obvious and can often take the form of subtle harmless gestures. Eye rolling, sarcasm, rumors, delay in responding to emails, can progress to more overt actions including undermining professional integrity, exclusion from opportunities, or withholding pertinent information is not uncommon in the workplace.
Disruptive behaviors can foster medical errors, contribute to poor patient satisfaction, increase cost of care, and cause qualified clinicians to seek new positions. Obtaining knowledge of the signs, symptoms, impacts, and resolutions of incivility is the first step to combat the behavior.
