The Development and Utilization of Quality Improvement Registries and Their Relevance to Neurocritical Care Conditions
DescriptionMedical registries of patients have existed well over a century and have been used to guide and improve patient care, develop disease prevention plans, assess pharmaceuticals, and guide research among other uses. A well built registry provides a core data set on a defined patient population with a common issue, such as enrolling patients with ischemic stroke. In order to develop a useful registry with high data fidelity, it is necessary to understand the complexities of registry creation and what makes a registry successful. This talk will review neurocritical care relevant registries, such as Get with the Guidelines (GWTG) and the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP). We will discuss how the specific measures were chosen, along with their methods of data collection and analysis, reporting of data, and maintenance of the registry. We will also review how the metrics were used to improve the quality of care and the keys to creating a successful registry. Through an understanding of the creation and utilization of the above registries, we will gain insight and can begin to discuss creating more neurocritical care specific registries, such as one for the Curing Coma Campaign.
