Varina L. Boerwinkle, MD is
• Tenured Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Epilepsy at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill
• She earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern and completed a residency in child neurology at Baylor College of Medicine.
• Her research interest is aimed at developing.
- High precision resting state fMRI (rs-fMRI) biomarkers of the abnormal networks in drug-resistant epilepsy, coma, movement disorder, and pain in children and adults.
• She currently serves as principal investigator on the first prospective multi-institutional rs-fMRI trial in children with epilepsy to determine the neuro-cognitive effects of surgery as well as advanced imaging analytics to improve brain networks.
• She is the Chair, Co-Chair, or Founder of the following: Neurocritical Care Society’s Curing Coma Campaign Pediatric Module, NCS Coma Common Data Elements Pediatric Group, and Pediatric Neurocritical Care Research Group Coma Focus Group
