SUMMARY:Medical Nutritional Therapy in Neurocritical Care – From Assessmen
 t to Intervention
DESCRIPTION:Breakout Session\n\nMoritz Schmidbauer (LMU Hospital)\n\nPatie
nts suffering from acute brain injury exhibit great metabolic vulnerabilit
y due to commonly observed factors such as pre-existing malnutrition, diso
rders of consciousness, dysphagia, and the effects of prolonged sedation.
This necessitates the implementation of specialized medical nutritional th
erapy, as both insufficient and excessive nutrition can lead to adverse ou
tcomes. Given the significant variability in metabolic demands among indiv
iduals and across different stages of illness, a tailored approach to nutr
itional support is paramount.\n\nThis talk will highlight the key concepts
of nutrition therapy in the neurointensive care unit and its impact on es
tablished outcome-relevant endpoints such as blood sugar (variability) and
ICU-acquired weakness. The presentation will explore the challenges of as
sessing nutritional needs and the strategies for implementing tailored nut
ritional interventions in a multidisciplinary team. It will also address t
he timing of nutrition therapy initiation and the adjustment of nutrition
therapy based on biomarkers and indirect calorimetry.\n\nTrack: Clinical P
ractice\n\nFocus Area: Coma, General Critical Care, Global Neurocritical C
are, Hospitalist Practice, Multimodal Neuromonitoring (invasive/non-invasi
ve), Nerve and Muscle Disease, Nursing Pharmacology\n\nTarget Audience: In
termediate, Advanced\n\nSession Chair: Lori Shutter (UPMC, University of P
 ittsburgh)
