SUMMARY:Metabolism and Encephalopathy in Neurocritical Care – Traditional
 Concepts and New Insights
DESCRIPTION:Breakout Session\n\nJulian Bösel (Neurology, Heidelberg Univer
sity Hospital; Neurology, Neurocritical Care, Johns Hopkins University Hos
pital)\n\nPatients suffering from acute brain injury exhibit great metabol
ic vulnerability. Factors such as endocrinologic and metabolic derangement
s due to primary insult, excessive flooding with stress hormones, multi-ph
armacological ICU therapy, organ failure and altered nutritional regimens
render the brain prone to different types of encephalopathy. The latter co
mprises a plethora of entities that is challenging to define and to grasp.
Quite often, it is overlooked, diagnosed too late or neglected in neurocr
itical care.\n\nThis talk will highlight the key traditional concepts of m
etabolic encephalopathies encountered in the Neurocritical Care Unit and e
xplore recent advances in the understanding of its pathophysiology, diagno
stics and monitoring, clinical course, treatment, and outcome. Here, the c
urrent data situation will be blended with the educational aims of the tal
 k. The presentation will explore the challenges of assessing and managing
metabolic encephalopathy in the NCCU, including when it co-exists with oth
er, more dominant acute brain injury. It will eventually suggest a standar
dized approach to metabolic encephalopathies via an SOP.\n\nTrack: Clinica
l Practice\n\nFocus Area: Coma, General Critical Care, Global Neurocritica
l Care, Hospitalist Practice, Multimodal Neuromonitoring (invasive/non-inv
asive), Nerve and Muscle Disease, Nursing Pharmacology\n\nTarget Audience:
Intermediate, Advanced\n\nSession Chair: Lori Shutter (UPMC, University o
 f Pittsburgh)
